            Socorro Islands Giant Mantas

            Picture

               8 Night Trips                                                                       $3000 USD

There are lots of places in the world where you can see mantas. Socorro Island is different, very unique and very special. You might only see 5 or 6 giant Pacific mantas here or perhaps 10 - 12 on a good trip. But you will always remember your encounters with the giant Pacific mantas at Socorro for this is an experience unlike any other. The very special thing about these particular mantas - and the thing that you will dream about long after your trip is over - is that they choose to interact with divers. The mantas come in very close (less than 1 metre) to divers, make eye contact with you and then swim along beside you. It's totally on their terms. The biggest of these mantas are 7 metres across and may well position themselves directly above you and tempt you to reach up and stroke their tummy. It is strictly forbidden to "ride" these animals and with that in mind, you can position on top of the manta allowing you to glide along - "drafting" - and going for a cruise through the ocean "manta-style." What's even more extraordinary is that it will often wait at the dive site while you grab some surface interval and be there to greet you on your next dive. The best analogy we can give is that it is like going to Africa and having an elephant walk out of the jungle to greet you and then spend the next hour amiably walking beside you as you stroll along.

            What people say

            • Had a pod of dolphins waiting to greet us. Hammerheads waiting for us at the cleaning stations. 3 mantas came in to distract us during what might have been the funnest safety stop ever. They swooped and dove and bumped several divers. Amazing dive. (Steve)
            • Absolutely awesome, almost orgasmic. Pacific diving at its best! (Kirk)
            • A landscape from another planet… You really are not prepared for the scale of these graceful giants. (Sue)
            • Unbelievable! And they are huge!!! (Bobby)
            • It is always interesting to be up at dawn as we arrive and guests see Roca Partida for the first time. My two favorite quotes are “I thought you were kidding” and “You’ve got to be crazy.” (Divemaster Tricia)
            • Some guests are already asking us if we have any open dates for next year! (Captain Mike)

            5 Night Trips                                                                              $2800 USD

Regular trip is 5 nights/6 days. Number of shark-dives on the trip is virtually unlimited. On the first morning upon arrival we do warm-up dives and afterwards the pool is always open. Current record is 31.5 hours of cage time over 3 dive days. We also offer 10- and 15-night Guadalupe combo-trips. 10-night trip combines diving with the great white sharks at Guadalupe Island with scuba diving in the giant kelp forests of the California Channel Islands and San Benito Islands and other remote islands on the Pacific side of Baja California. 15-night expedition in November combines Guadalupe and San Benitos with the famous giant mantas and dolphins of Socorro Island.

            What people say

            • Our eyes wide, we peered into the deep blue depths. A few minutes later a shadow caught my attention. Slowly, calmly, it approached. 14 feet long, swift, and strong. Face-to-face with a Great White Shark: what a moment! (Laurie)
            • Breaching, biting, and burping!!! An incredible day… (David)
            • I thought this trip would involve sitting in a cage and seeing the occasional shark but instead it was nonstop action and really exciting… (Linh)
            • I knew when I came out with Mike the first time I had to come back. And I have fulfilled that dream. (Dan)
            • Just amazing. Could I have dinner in the hot tub please? (Jaclyn)
            • Imagine catching sight of a 4-meter white shark just as it enters your range of vision, swimming straight toward you. Now he's only 20 feet away and you drop inside with just your head poking up out of the top of the cage. The shark is now only 10 feet in front of you, and turns just slightly before swimming into the cage, passing literally only a few feet from you, at your exact eye level, looking directly into your eyes. Wow! (Captain Gordon)
